The mighty organ

In 2015, Hey played for Pope Francis at St. Patrick's Cathedral and Madison Square Garden during the late pontiff's only US visit. He brings that same instrument, on a much larger scale, to his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut.

Notre-Dame de Paris' titular organist since 1985 returns to play the hall's massive pipes "as if it were a living thing," per Organists' Review, in a program the Los Angeles Times has called "high-voltage."

McVinnie treats the pipe organ as classical music's original synthesizer, pairing it with actual synths for a set spanning Sara Davachi's immersive drones, Laurie Spiegel's algorithmic compositions, and Squarepusher's breakbeat maximalism. It's the organ recital rebuilt from the circuits up.

Gumbs taught himself organ by sneaking into his Bronx church on Saturday nights. Now Director of Chapel Music at Yale, he returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall to put the hall's 6,134 pipes through everything from a whisper to what he calls an "ear-splitting roar."
