What is TikTok? Sure, it’s a social media app. People can share videos ranging from 15 seconds to 10 minutes about anything they wish. Post a TikTok video which is seen by millions of people, and your online career can begin in style. But for the vast majority of people, TikTok is an app of escapism, providing joy and an infinite vat of videos.

Being on TikTok isn’t something to be embarrassed about. Over 800 million users post billions of videos on the app each month. Many videos share the same music, allowing users to feel as if they’re part of an online community. If a sound is used often enough, it will go “viral.” Everyone’s For You Page (FYP for short) shows a slightly different mix of videos, based on likes and engagement. Some sounds are extremely popular, and a fair few of them are from musicals, too.

Here are some of the trending TikTok musical theatre sounds taking over our FYPs.

“Meant to be Yours” from Heathers The Musical

Heathers music was poised for TikTok virality. The cult musical was a hit with teenagers off Broadway and now in the West End, and budding performers on the app often sing the new songs in the West End production. But it’s Jamie Muscato’s rendition of “Meant to Be Yours” which took over TikTok and become a popular sound.

Jamie Muscato played J.D. in the original London cast of Heathers at The Other Palace and at Theatre Royal Haymarket. The video above has nearly seven million views, and the video’s popularity has put the song in the “Spotify Viral” playlist. Not bad for a 30-second clip.

“Naughty” from Matilda the Musical

We’re not sure how “Naughty” from Matilda became so popular on TikTok. But all of a sudden, hundreds of people now claim to have played Matilda Wormwood in productions of Matilda around the world. People are joining in with the trend whether they were a fan of the show, wished they could play Matilda, or actually did lead the cast as a child actor.

“Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” from Mamma Mia!

Every day is an excellent day to listen to ABBA songs. And now, the incessant hours of scrolling on TikTok come with an ABBA soundtrack, as the song “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” is now TikTok viral. In particular, the line “How old are you? I’m 20” gained notoriety, with people using it for as a sound for their 20th birthday, or to show the age difference between friends, family, and coworkers. Listen out for this line in the Mamma Mia! musical.

“Legally Blonde” from Legally Blonde

We all wish we could dance and high kick with ease, but we’ll leave it to the professionals. However, when the audition choreography for the 2022 MUNY production of Legally Blonde dropped on TikTok, the routine became an instant hit. People around the world learned the choreography and shared their attempts. Some users complained about the routine’s complexity, and some applicants even shared their real self-tapes — we’re awaiting the cast list with anticipation.

“The Phantom of the Opera” from The Phantom of the Opera

There are plenty of TikTok remixes across the app. To create a remix, users combine two popular songs together to see if they mash up. Occasionally, they don’t work, or they struggle to gain an audience. Other times, TikTok remixes are simply inspired. After Andrew Lloyd Webber DJed at the Broadway reopening of The Phantom of the Opera, this mashup of musical theatre and Nicki Minaj deserves a rightful place on this list.

“All You Wanna Do” from Six the Musical

Six the Musical retells the stories of Henry VIII’s sextet of wives. The fifth wife, Katherine Howard, sings about her woes with men and what eventually led her to marrying the Tudor monarch. However, the TikTok community has revamped the song, taking the line “yeah that didn’t work out” to show different hobbies they’ve tried. Not everything works out in the end, and that’s ok.

“Boho Days” from tick, tick… BOOM!

There have been a flurry of movie musicals in recent years: shows like Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Dear Evan Hansen are now immortalised in cinema glory. But it’s tick, tick… BOOM! which really took over TikTok toward the end of 2021. In particular, the song “Boho Days” went viral, with people overlaying videos and photos to showcase that they really do “have the life.” Even if the song is used out of context, this TikTok trend shows that life can be made a bit better with a bit of musical theatre.

“Therapy” from tick, tick… BOOM!

If a TikTok song goes viral, it’s likely that there is an accompanying dance routine. And the complicated movements in the tick, tick… BOOM! song “Therapy” lent themselves perfectly to the app. A 60-second dance routine that showcases precision and it’s theatre? We’ll watch it on repeat.

“No Me Diga” from In The Heights

In The Heights gained a new legion of fans thanks to TikTok. In particular, a section from “No Me Diga” went viral for its ability to be replicated in other situations. To use the sound to its full effect, people would play the song and film themselves revealing a secret to their friends during the line “Usnavi had sex with Yolanda.” The end result is a live reaction as though they’re reacting to the song. Musical theatre TikTok is turning everyone into actors.

“Electricity” from Billy Elliot

You may know Tom Holland as Spiderman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But did you know he was a West End chidl actor? Holland played the title ballet dancer in Billy Elliot. So when a clip of Tom Holland singing “Electricity” made it to TikTok, it was bound for viral fame.

“Say My Name” from Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is returning to Broadway in spring 2022, and we’re pretty sure that the TikTok generation will make Beetlejuice songs go viral. And at Halloween, Beetlejuice musical sounds are especially guaranteed to get traffic. In particular, the song “Say My Name” is commonly used as a POV (point of view) video for people to create their own stories. We’re in love with this makeup transition too.

Lin-Manuel Miranda

A list that celebrates TikTok creativity without Lin-Manuel Miranda feels… wrong. Songs from Hamilton, In the Heights, and tick, tick… BOOM! have gained popularity thanks to the app. But his own voice as a trending TikTok sound? That’s happened too. A video of him saying “Think of things, come on brain, be so smart…” went viral for its adaptability to a variety of situations. When we don’t know what to do, either, we often utter this TikTok to ourselves.
