Ethan Slater Brings Original Music to The W for TodayTix Presents
He’s not a simple sponge! The Tony-nominated star of “SpongeBob SquarePants” launched the first TodayTix Presents concert with a mix of original music, classic rock hits, and new arrangements of classic show tunes at The W in Times Square.
Performing at The W’s cocktail lounge, The Living Room, Slater was joined by some of his “SpongeBob” co-stars Lilli Cooper and Nick Blaemire. Cooper played the squirrel Sandy Cheeks on Broadway, Blaemire played Sheldon Plankton during the musical’s Chicago stop. (“SpongeBob” director Tina Landau was in the audience, cheering on her cast.)
Slater opened the show with a selection of songs from his original musical, “Edge of the World,” which he co-wrote with Blaemire, including “Alaska Here We Come,” “Surround Our Camp,” and “Make a Fire.
Next, he moved into a series of classic rock songs, wailing on tunes from “Julio Down By the Schoolyard” and “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down.” Lilli Cooper also sang a rousing rendition of “Boston” from “Edge of the World.”
Guests enjoyed themed cocktails for the evening, including Bikini Bottom Punch and Pineapple Tonic Mocktail. Slater, Blaemire, and Cooper were joined by Mike Dobson on percussion. The trio ended the evening with “Raised By Wolves” from “Edge of the World.” The crowd went crazy, and Blaemire and Slater came back for an encore of “What You Own” from “Rent.”
