Unlike some of The Second City’s other productions, Late Night Date Night in the Up Comedy Club is entirely improvised. At just an hour, this sassy, sexy show demonstrates the comedic genius of The Second City’s performers. Because it is all improv, you are guaranteed to have vastly different performances each time you see it.
Some of the improv showstoppers you can expect to see in Late Night Date Night include Tina Arfaee, Mary Catherine Curran, Brittani Yawn, and Kevin Noonan. In all, there are a baker’s dozen improvisers behind Late Night Date Night.

Audience participation is not a given in shows at The Second City, though it is a big part of Late Night Date Night. Since the show is all improv, the performers will need folks to chime in with ideas – the good, bad, and the ugly. Come with your best ideas to make the show even more fun for everyone.
The fully improvised show is directed by Cat McDonnell. Frequent visitors to The Second City will likely recognize McDonnell from her work across various productions with the company. She has also performed with iO Chicago and The Annoyance Theatre, among others. Musical director for the show John Love works with The Second City in various capacities with his melodic prowess. Besides directing for the improv company, he is also the pianist for Chicago collective The North and Wells Band.
Late Night Date Night performs at The Second City’s UP Comedy Club. This smaller theatre space is often where you’ll see the standup or solo performances produced by Second City. This is the Chicago theatre’s third performance space, also housed in the complex in Old Town. Given the nature of the show, Late Night Date Night is rated R and performed at 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings. And minors must be accompanied by an adult to enter. As general admission, seating begins 45 minutes before showtime.
What to Watch For
- The Second City is a self-deprecating nickname for Chicago. Most of the city burned down in the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, so it was rebuilt, making it a second city.
- Now recognized as one of the world’s foremost comedic and improv theatres, The Second City has a huge number of famous alumni. Some of these include Amy Poehler, Tim Meadows, Gilda Radner, and Martin Short.
- Since it was founded in 1959, The Second City in Chicago has blossomed elsewhere. There are locations in Los Angeles and Toronto, as well as touring productions.
- From the Second City, a musical review, went to Broadway from The Second City in Chicago in 1961. It received Tony Award nominations for performances by Barbara Harris and Severn Darden.
