About The Spongebob Musical

Everyone’s favorite undersea fry cook is back in Chicago. Spongebob the Musical stars the whimsical Spongebob and all his Bikini Bottom pals who find themselves in peril. A volcano eruption threatens the very existence of their humble underwater town, so Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy, and yes, even Squidward must come together to save the day!

Although its characters are derived from the Nickelodeon series by Stephen Hillenburg, the music from Spongebob the Musical isn’t just some sitcom schlock. These original songs are by some heavy hitters like Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Sara Bareilles, and Yolanda Adams, just to name a few. There’s a reason this show was nominated for and won so many awards following its Broadway debut.

This time around, it’s Kokandy Productions making its Bikini Bottom debut. In true Kokandy fashion, this rollicking musical will surely be a vibrant production. After all, Kokandy has made its name in Chicago with musical prowess. Get tickets to Kokandy's production of Spongebob the Musical on TodayTix.

Like many Broadway-bound shows, Spongebob the Musical had a pre-Broadway try-out in Chicago. In June 2016, the show debuted at downtown Chicago's then-Oriental Theatre, now Nederlander Theatre. After receiving positive reviews, the show opened on Broadway in December 2017. It went on to tie for the most Tony Award nominations with Mean Girls with 12 nods, including for Best New Musical.

Kokandy’s production stars Frankie Leo Bennett as Spongebob, returning after his stint as Basilius with the company’s production of Head Over Heels. Bennett is known in the Chicago theatrical community for embracing musical character roles. Previous roles include Toby in Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre’s Sweeney Todd and Sonny in Porchlight Music Theatre’s In the Heights.

Book writer Kyle Jarrow isn’t just well known for writing Spongebob the Musical. Several other incredible works are under his belt, including A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant, Hostage Song, and The Wildness.

What to Watch For

  • Tom Kitt, known for his music and compositions, worked on Spongebob the Musical. He also worked on Head Over Heels, which Kokandy Productions staged in 2019.
  • This musical has an entirely original storyline. While knowing the characters and Bikini Bottom may help connect you to the show, you don’t have to be familiar with the TV show to enjoy the musical.
  • Before he created "Spongebob Squarepants," Stephen Hillenburg wrote and directed episodes of another Nickelodeon series: "Rocko’s Modern Life." The Spongebob Musical was one of the last projects Hillenburg signed off on before he died in 2018.
  • The musical was conceived and directed by Tina Landau, a Broadway director and member of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble.
