It should come as no surprise that Chicago has a longstanding history with burlesque. At the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, a burlesque performer known as Little Egypt (her real name was Fareeda Mahzar) performed and immediately became a sensation – and yes, that notoriety hit both sides of the acceptability spectrum. Not everyone was a fan of the show.
Chicago hosted the World’s Fair again in 1933. The Century of Progress event featured dancer Sally Rand whose “indecent” dancing had her arrested numerous times. Although times have changed, Chicago’s appreciation for the art of burlesque has not waned.
What to Watch For
- Like many variety shows, tipping is optional, though appreciated. Bring your singles so you don’t get stuck pulling from a nearby, fee-hungry ATM.
- The Newport Theatre is in the heart of the Belmont Theatre District in Lakeview. That puts it within walking distance of other theatres, bars, restaurants, and shops.
- With intimate seating arrangements and a specialty cocktail menu, the show almost resembles a speakeasy. You’d be in good company in a Chicago speakeasy, as even Prohibition didn’t stop Chicagoans from having a good time.
