Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 2 (THU. & SAT.)
Alexander Scriabin: Piano Concerto (FRI.)
Igor Stravinsky: L’Oiseau de feu (The Firebird)
The Washington Post describes Daniil Trifonov’s recent interpretations of the music of Russia’s ‘Silver Age’ as “a distinct balance of brute force and beauty” with “a detectable extra dollop of menace.”
For Thursday and Saturday’s concerts, Trifonov tackles Prokofiev’s towering Piano Concerto No. 2. At Friday’s performance, he brings Scriabin’s Piano Concerto to poetic, lyrical life. Gianandrea Noseda bookends each program with the Sinfonia No. 4 by trailblazing American composer George Walker and Stravinsky’s revolutionary ballet The Firebird.
