About Drunk Shakespeare

At Drunk Shakespeare, an evening of rollicking fun with the bard awaits patrons. Be part of the fun at The Lion Theatre and get Drunk Shakespeare tickets on TodayTix!

Since 2014 when the show made its debut Off-Broadway, Drunk Shakespeare has blossomed into a few other locations, Chicago included. Audiences at Chicago’s The Lion Theatre are engrossed by the fun and sometimes very unfamiliar Shakespearean romps as the cast tries to keep the story on balance while their drunk comrade brings chaos.

Drunk Shakespeare began its raucous Bard retellings in Chicago in May 2019. Ever since, the speakeasy has hosted crowds clamoring for Shakespeare as you’ve truly never seen it before. Not to worry, if you wish you imbibe along with the actors, the cocktail bar on-site is more than happy to oblige.

Tell me more

Drunk Shakespeare is a 90-minute performance with five actors who attempt to perform a secret Shakespearean play – one which you will immediately recognize. The cast will attempt to perform a shortened version of the story in the shortened runtime. The trick is that four of the performers are sober, and one takes several shots of whiskey in front of the

Inspired by the show Drunk History on Comedy Central, Drunk Shakespeare premiered at Quinn’s Bar and Grill in 2014. Created by Scott Griffin and David Hudson, the show now lives on beyond its Off-Broadway roots. There have been over 2,000 performances of Drunk Shakespeare to date!

Although Drunk Shakespeare is supposed to be fun and silly with a boozy side, patrons are not permitted to become overly intoxicated or disruptive. Since the show involves drinking and the show can get, well, off-script, the performances are strictly 21+. There are no exceptions.

What to Watch For

  • The hidden theatre, The Lion Theatre, can be found near the historic Chicago Theater. When you enter through the bar area, you’ll pass through a library that contains over 10,000 books.
  • Because of the nature of these shows, every performance is different – making repeat visits an excellent choice.
  • For an additional fee, you and another patron can be the King and Queen or a variation of that theme for the evening. You get to sit on a throne, have power over the play and enjoy all sorts of goodies like champagne during the evening.
  • There are five venues in the “Drunk Shakespeare Society.” Other locales include New York City, Houston, D.C., and Pheonix. Each society has its own cast of performers.
