It starts in pretty much the same way every great tech start-up begins: nearly two decades ago at a performing arts camp in Upstate New York. A terrifying thought: two singing and dancing 12 year olds met and became friends, not yet knowing their place in the theater world, but surrounded by a deep passion for the arts. As summer camp became a distant memory the two moved down different paths.
Years later, Merritt graduated from Stanford University with a double major in economics and drama. He became an M&A Analyst at Lazard Freres and from there was hired by viagogo, Europe's largest ticket marketplace. He stayed close to theater, producing The Merchant of Venice on Broadway in 2010 and Death of a Salesman in 2012, which won him a Tony Award.
Brian attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, becoming an entrepreneurial investor and strategist focused on the convergence of technology, commerce and creative thinking. He held various roles in the professional arts world, including being one of Broadway's youngest producers at age 23.
In their modern theater experience, they were observing troubling trends around them: aging demographics, poor user experience and exceptionally high ticketing fees. Frustrated by the lack of innovation in the theater industry and the challenges they faced as producers selling tickets, they decided to come back to theater full-time to launch TodayTix in 2013. By adding mobile technology and adapting to consumers’ last-minute buying habits, Brian and Merritt hope to not only bring audiences to live theater more often, but also to introduce new and tech-savvy audiences to theater.
Merritt started his career in mergers and acquisitions at Lazard, before moving to Europe to lead the primary inventory division at viagogo, the world’s largest ticket marketplace. He became a Broadway producer in 2010 (The Merchant of Venice), and later produced Death of a Salesman (Tony Award Winner) and Romeo and Juliet. In 2012, he teamed up with his life-long friend, Brian Fenty, to launch TodayTix.
Brian has led and managed varied private investments across a broad range of industries, focusing on product and talent. He is an active adviser to start-ups, growth stage companies and management teams. Previously an MD at Hamilton Investment Partners. Currently, Brian serves on the Board of The Institute for Arts and Humanities at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he received his Bachelors degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship.
