More information about Anastasia

Your childhood fantasies come to life onstage in this lush and luminous musical about the young Anastasia and how she escaped Bolshevik rule. Inspired by the myth of the real-life Anastasia Nikolaevna and based on the 1997 animated film and 1956 movie, the musical is a magical journey about the power of family and love. The young Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia is caught by the Romanov’s firing squad, who are aiming to kill her entire family. She’s shot and presumed dead — even her grandmother, the Dowager Empress, the only living member of the royal clan, thinks she is gone forever. But all is not lost. A street rat Anya, who doesn’t know her own origins, finds herself wandering the alleys of St. Petersberg, now renamed Lenigrad by the Bolshevik general Gleb. When rumors surface that Anastasia is alive, two con men, Dmitry and Vlad, plot to find her and return her to the Dowager Empress for a reward. But when Anya finds her way in off the street and starts to remember, fate takes control.

Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who wrote the film’s iconic songs like “Once Upon a December” and “Journey to the Past,” penned the musical’s score, and Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally wrote the libretto. “Time Out New York” says “Anastasia is the richest and fullest family show to hit Broadway in years,” and “Variety” raves that “the sumptuous fairytale of a musical...should please the kids, satisfy the sentimental and comfort those who thought the old templates for musical comedy were passé.”

May be inappropriate for 7 and under. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

What to watch for

Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who wrote the songs for the 1997 animated film, wrote several new songs for the stage musical. (All of the songs from the movie are also in the musical.)

Projections designer Aaron Rhyne travelled to Paris for inspiration and to capture the lush environments for the show’s backdrops.

The Bolshevik general Gleb is a new character for the musical and replaces the film’s Rasputin.

Christy Altomare, who plays the title character, dressed up as Anastasia for her audition and booked the role.

The musical had its world premiere at Hartford Stage in Connecticut before moving to Broadway.
