Presenting Z Space's 2024 Artist-in-Residence Austin Dean Ashford in the San Francisco debut of an innovative solo work. Black Books a tour-de-force dramedy at the intersection of Speech and Debate. Welcome to Melvin B. Tolson High School—it's summer school, it's hot, the barbwire fence is fixed, and a young African American boy has been shot, leaving his group of friends reeling from the loss and wondering if their voices can ever be heard. Austin Dean Ashford’s dynamic and profound genre-bending work runs the gamut from theater, original songs, ukulele playing, spoken word, and rap. His work has won awards from the Kennedy Center, The San Diego International Fringe Festival, the New Zealand International Fringe Festival and more. This February at Z Below, Black Book is running in rep with (I)sland T(rap), another solo work by Ashford.
