Illicit Bar, Crooked Casino, Vaudeville Cabaret... Speakeasy is the hit Immersive Theatrical Experience that submerges you in the sumptuous world of a 1920's San Francisco Speakeasy. Choose your own adventure as you follow one of 30 stories, and create one of your own!
What is the dress code policy? The Speakeasy's dress code is strictly enforced on Saturday, and optional on other performances. However, all patrons are encouraged to dress up no matter what date they are attending to be fully immersed in the fun. 1920’s apparel is preferred, and cocktail attire is also acceptable. Cocktail attire includes a button down collared shirt and tie with slacks and dress shoes; or cocktail style dresses and dress shoes. Tennis shoes, yoga pants, T-shirts, denim, or other casual clothes are not considered acceptable on Saturday evenings. Patrons who are dressed up are more likely to be chosen for audience interaction.
“The Speakeasy” is a Prohibition-era immersive theater experience that promises to be transportive — cell phones are not allowed, and 1920s garb is encouraged. It’s also a choose-your-own adventure: audience members can mingle at the bar, catch a cabaret performance, wander into the dressing rooms, or even try their hand in a round of roulette. Unlike many immersive theater experiences, guests at “The Speakeasy” are free to create their own pathway. Opt into one-on-one experiences with performers, or sip the show’s speciality cocktails at the bar with friends. The performance venue is disguised as a clockshop, and guests are brought to the undisclosed location from a designated meeting point a few blocks away.
San Francisco’s Boxcar Theatre first debuted “The Speakeasy” in the city’s Tenderloin District in 2013. Now the show resides in Chinatown, with a much bigger space fit with many secret passageways, hallways, and staircases better fit for exploratory guests. The Boxcar Theatre company is known for its site specific performances throughout the Bay Area, and for developing new plays. The success of “The Speakeasy” has afforded the company to move into a permanent home, The Palace Theater, located in the neighborhood of North Beach.
Recommended for ages 16 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult over 21.
There are more than 25 characters in the show, and the show never repeats.
“The Speakeasy” is available for celebration packages, offering up a fun experience for your next night out.
Don’t have a flapper dress or a tailcoat? “The Speakeasy” offers costume rentals.
