About The Jungle
From January 2015 to October 2016, in Calais, France, the Jungle became the unlikely home to thousands of migrants and refugees who had fled in desperation from far-flung nations. For some, the Jungle stood as a tribute to the human will to survive and a stark reminder of a human rights crisis too big to ignore. For others, it stoked long-held fears about the dangers of mass migration.
Now, the heart-stopping stories of those who inhabited this desolate patch of land in France roar back to life in this shockingly intimate and wildly acclaimed production that plunges its audience directly into its subject matter. Hailed by Bay Area critics as “visceral and haunting” (Mercury News), “a sensory bombardment” (SF Chronicle), and “vibrantly theatrical and pointedly contemporary” (SF Examiner), The Jungle is a once-in-a-lifetime event not to be missed.
Less than three years after its massive and historic renovation, Curran’s 1600 seat proscenium theater is transformed once more in order to house "The Jungle's" 360° staging and designer Miriam Buether’s award-winning set. Audiences will inhabit the world of the Afghan café in the Calais camp, with the mezzanine allowing unique views over the performance space. This extraordinary transformation will reduce the capacity of the theater to an intimate 600 seats.
