Celebrated for “her energetic, athletic conducting style, favoring big gestures to accentuate a commanding visual presence on the podium” (The Aspen Times), Gemma New leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic through Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Fourth Symphony which grapples with fate.
New begins the evening with the colorful Spanish flair, cymbals, and castanets of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, followed a standout classical showpiece from Armenia. Pacho Flores, dubbed “the Paganini of the trumpet” by Bachtrack, returns to perform Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto, bringing his “flutter-tonguing, breath control, tone, timbre and the kaleidoscopic colours [which are] flawless.”
