About Funny Girl on Broadway

Featuring one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, a revised book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, tap choreography by Ayodele Casel, choreography by Ellenore Scott, and direction from Michael Mayer, this love letter to the theatre is ready to step back into the spotlight.

Golden Globe® nominee Beanie Feldstein stars alongside Tony® nominee Ramin Karimloo, five-time Emmy Award® winner Jane Lynch and Jeff Award winner Jared Grimes and dazzles with the songs “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” This bittersweet comedy is the story of the indomitable Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage. Everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened—she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights of Broadway.

The Funny Girl musical tells the semi-autobiographical story of variety performer Fanny Brice. Her family worries that she’ll forget about them when she becomes a star, but she ends up with bigger problems as she’s propelled into fame. She falls in love with the suave gambler Nick Arnstein, but Nick’s shady past casts a shadow on their relationship. As Fanny reaches a height of fame and luxury by his side, she also risks losing it all.

The original Funny Girl Broadway production, featuring a book by Isobel Stennart, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Bob Merrill, premiered in 1964 to critical acclaim. Within four years, a film adaptation came out that made a household name — and an Academy Award winner — out of Barbra Streisand, who played Fanny Brice in both the musical and the film. The 2022 revival features a revised book based on Stennart’s original, penned by four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. His book was first used in a London revival of Funny Girl in 2015. Choreography is by Ellenore Scott and tap choreography is by Ayodele Casel, and Tony Award winner Michael Mayer directs.

What to Watch For

  • This production marks the first-ever Broadway revival of Funny Girl, more than 50 years after the show premiered in 1964.
  • Fanny Brice was a real-life Ziegfeld Follies actress who also performed in Broadway shows including Fioretta, Sweet and Low, and Billy Rose's Crazy Quilt.
  • Brice’s story is the basis of Funny Girl. Her son-in-law Ray Stark, who was married to Brice’s daughter with the real-life Nicky Arnstein, produced the original Funny Girl musical.
  • The real-life Fanny Brice and her character are both Jewish, so it’s custom for a Jewish actress to play the role. When the original Broadway production was in development, Carol Burnett was offered the role of Fanny but turned it down, telling the producers to hire a Jewish actress. Composer Jule Styne thought of Streisand after seeing her on Broadway in I Can Get It For You Wholesale, and the rest is history!
  • The original Broadway production was nominated for eight Tony Awards in 1964 but won none. Granted, Funny Girl had stiff competition — the show lost in five categories, including Best Musical, to Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing.
  • Glee fans will recognize Funny Girl as Rachel Berry’s favorite musical. Rachel even auditions for a fictional revival of the show during Glee’s fifth season and lands the role of Fanny. (Ironically, Jane Lynch, who played the musical-hating Sue Sylvester on Glee, was cast in the real revival as Fanny’s mother.)
