"Jewels," inspired by a visit by Balanchine to Van Cleef & Arpels, consists of three acts: “Emeralds,” “Rubies” and “Diamonds,” featuring music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, respectively.
Balanchine used jewelry imagery to inform his choreography, incorporating leg extensions that suggest refracted light through the gemstones. Each act is styled and composed in stark contrast, united only by the dancers’ dazzling costumes inlaid with colored gems that correspond to the title. Although it did not receive its first performance at the Mariinsky Theatre until 1999, "Jewels" has since become Balanchine’s calling card at the theatre and a core part of the company’s repertoire. The Mariinsky Ballet is one of the world’s preeminent dance companies, home to many of ballet’s most celebrated dancers and steeped in artistic heritage.
