Aussies overseas! Our favourite musical theatre stars on the international stage
There is no doubt that Australia is home to some truly talented performers, however, much of our home grown talent seeks success on foreign shores.
Here’s a look at some of the successful Aussie musical theatre performers making waves on the international stage!
The heart of Australian musical theatre, Josh Piterman recently rose to new heights when he secured the role of Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera on the West End. Melbourne local and Green Room Award winner, Piterman is an incredibly talented and versatile performer, having played a range of iconic roles from Tony in West Side Story to Bustopher Jones in Cats. Fingers crossed we’ll be able to catch Josh on the stage ASAP when Phantom returns.
From Australia to Germany to New York, is there anywhere this leading lady hasn’t been? This incredibly talented performer likens her life to that of Cabaret’s Sally Bowles, and has graced many a stage and has performed in iconic roles from Cassie in A Chorus Line to Esmerelda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Now residing in NYC, we can’t wait to see what Sarah is up to next!
The talented Patrick Studios alumni Alex Given has quite an impressive resume. He has performed in West Side Story, Strictly Ballroom, South Pacific, and recently moved all the way to London to play Elder Price in The Book of Mormon on the West End. Though his run on the show recently ended, we are so excited to see what comes next for this young up and coming performer.
Did somebody say Hamilton? Yes, Hamilton! Melbourne local Karli Dinardo trained at Patrick Studios before moving onto NYC where she was cast in Flashdance: The Musical, The Music Man, Hamilton, and more recently in Broadway’s Moulin Rouge. Karli also briefly came back to Australia last year to perform as Anita in West Side Story on Sydney Harbour.
Ballet extraordinaire Dimitri Kleioris trained at the acclaimed Australian Ballet School and is now a company dancer of Sydney Dance Company. This talented dancer made his Broadway debut playing the lead in An American in Paris; he has also performed with Opera Australia in Death in Venice and has toured with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Mum, singer, dancer, Hamilton performer. Kim Taylor can do it all. After a slew of successful runs in the U.S. (we’re talking the likes of Chicago, The Addams Family, Ragtime), this powerhouse performer was cast in Hamilton on Broadway. We’re keeping tabs on this incredible performer, and can’t wait to see her back on the big stage.
