After months of theatres being closed throughout Australia, the performing arts industry is back. Australia really is the best place in the world to be if you’re a theatre lover. Across the country, theatres are finally open, with plenty of nationwide premieres as well as new productions being embraced by audiences. 

Here’s all of the shows that are currently opening in Australia in 2021. We’ve listed shows opening in Melbourne and Sydney respectively, with productions listed below also set to entertain Brisbane and Perth audiences.

Melbourne Shows

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by Thorne playing exclusively at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. It is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. 

The magic of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child returned to the stage on 25 Feb, 2021. A new cast will commence from Wed 26 May, 2021. Joining the company are: Green Room Award-winner Natasha Herbert as Dolores Umbridge, Torres Strait-Islander, former professional rugby league player and Wagadagam man Michael Bani as Bane, NIDA and VCA graduate Aisha Aidara making her professional debut as Rose Granger-Weasely and Melbourne-based actor Ben Walter who will assume the role of Albus Potter. Along with Gabriella Barbagallo, Luke Clayson, Axel Duffy, Katie-Jean Harding, Matt Holly, Abdul Muhaimin, Harrison Riley, Tom Russell and David Spencer.

The Australian Ballet

The Australian Ballet returns to Arts Centre Melbourne for the 2021 winter season from June opening with New York Dialects and Anna Karenina. In Spring, Romeo & Juliet and Harlequinade will excite audiences in September. 

New York Dialects is presented as a triple bill of two of New York’s best choreographers.  Two revered classics from the legendary game-changer of ballet George Balanchine with a brand-new creation from a 21st-century innovator Pam Tanowitz.  New York Dialects is a poetic homage to the roots of modern dance.

The Phantom of the Opera

Opera Australia in association with The Really Useful Group, will present Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, making its highly anticipated premiere at the Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre from 14 November.


The Disney hit Frozen has launched in Australia. Join Elsa, Anna and Olaf in the winter paradise of Arendelle and imagine you’re in a Disney dream. Frozen will open its doors on 9 June at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne, just in time for Winter!

Sydney Shows

We’ve been willing to “Wait For It” but not for much longer now. Hamilton made its Australian premiere at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, and the Australian production of Hamilton will be the first worldwide production to reopen since theatres were shut down globally. Hamilton performances are currently scheduled in Sydney to 19 Dec. 2021. After performances in Sydney, Hamilton will then transfer to Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, with performances from 16 Mar. 2022.

Jagged Little Pill

The Alanis Morrisette musical Jagged Little Pill will make its Australasian premiere in 2021. The 15-time Tony Award-nominated musical is inspired by the nineties album of the same name. Jagged Little Pill will run at Theatre Royal Sydney for nine weeks, and it’s guaranteed to be one of the shows of 2021.

Sydney Opera House

Check out all the Opera Australia shows at Sydney Opera House in 2021.

Opera Australia’s winter season includes Aida, Attila, Otello and The Tales of Hoffman. There’s also the Australian Ballet summer season, including Harlequinade and Romeo and Juliet.
