New York City Center has been a renowned performing arts venue since 1943. Under the purview of former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, the building, which was erected in 1923, was converted from its original use as a Shriners' temple.

New York City Center has hosted all types of music and theatre shows throughout its history, and it was a popular venue for Off-Broadway revivals of Broadway musicals.

Today, New York City Center uses its 2,557-seat mainstage to host numerous dance companies' shows as well as the Tony-winning Encores! series, which presents limited runs of seldom-revived musicals. The building also houses two smaller spaces, in which Manhattan Theatre Club presents its Off-Broadway productions.
