Heidi Schreck in “What the Constitution Means to Me”

Theater and political Twitter erupted into a storm on Saturday night, when Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg attended Heidi Schreck’s “What the Constitution Means to Me” on Broadway. Things were bursting inside the theater as well, as Ginsburg received a standing ovation when she walked in (and even during the performance at a special moment we won’t spoil here).

In the play, playwright/performer Schreck recreates the constitutional debate competition from when she was 15 while examining how the document has systematically served and failed the women in her family and other under-represented communities in the United States over the years. She’s joined onstage by Mike Iveson, who portrays the debate moderator, and teen debaters Rosdely Ciprian and Thursday Williams, who alternate performances and join Schreck in a live debate about whether to keep or abolish the U.S. Constitution at the end of the show.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Justice Sonya Sotomayor
The Supreme Court justices each attended performances at the Helen Hayes Theatre recently about a week apart. Thursday Williams, who alternates with Rosdely Ciprian as the teen debater in the final live debate, is a member of Sotomayor’s judicial internship program, and we’re so curious what these badass legal minds thought of the show.

Hillary Clinton
The former secretary of state attended the play when it was still at New York Theatre Workshop last fall, and took to Twitter to call the show, “an empowering call to consider what it means to be a citizen.”

We can only assume the Oscar winners went out on a friend date to the show. (And we really wonder what Streep thought when Schreck does a “Dingo ate my baby!” line reading.)
