Show your support this Giving Tuesday by streaming shows & donating to theaters

The holiday season is finally upon us, and while we’re unpacking our menorahs and decorating our apartment-sized Christmas trees, we are reminded that the 2020 holiday season looks completely different from years past. As theater lovers, so many of our holiday traditions like seeing The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular or The Nutcracker are not options, as performing arts institutions around the country remain shuttered 8 months after the pandemic began. It cannot be overstated that so many of our beloved theaters are experiencing a difficult time, and Giving Tuesday presents an opportunity for us to lend a helping hand (or, dollar).

Giving Tuesday is a global charitable campaign following the retail holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday that shifts focus from deal-hunting and gift-buying to the true reason for the season: giving to those in need. We know what an exceeding challenging time this is and that not everyone is able to donate, but if you are able, consider donating to non-profit theaters and arts organizations.

While donating outright is an option, we know that we could all use a little holiday spirit and new quarantine entertainment options. This Giving Tuesday, we’ve rounded up performances that you can stream, all benefitting great causes and organizations. Plus, who doesn’t want to attend a gala in their Christmas pajamas?

The 5th Annual Broadway Bee

P-h-i-l-a-n-t-h-r-o-p-y. From the Latin philanthrōpia. Used in a sentence: the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes, such as The 5th Annual Broadway Bee.

This intense competition features Broadway favorites including Paige Davis (the reining champ), Patrick Page, Amy Spanger, Michael Park and more battling it out in a spelling bee to raise money for Broadway Bound Kids. Proceeds will counteract the losses from COVID-19 and continue to foster connection, community and creativity in youth around the country by providing them with equitable access to the arts. The event is technically free, but we encourage you to contribute what you can starting at $5.

School Girls; or the African Mean Girls Play

The critically acclaimed, sold-out hit comedy by Jocelyn Bioh is back in session for a one-night only virtual reading benefitting MCC Theater. The reading of this 2018 Lortel Award winner for Best Play and New York Times Critic’s Pick explores the universal similarities (and glaring differences) facing teenage girls across the globe, and stars Cynthia Erivo, Amber Riley, and Storm Reid. The live reading is December 13 and tickets are just $30, but if you are able to donate a bit more to MCC, you can purchase tickets to the show PLUS access to a talkback afterwards.

Your donation helps MCC continue its mission of provoking conversations through their virtual programming and prepare for its 2021 Return. Who knew being mean could be so nice? Get tickets from $30.

The 24 Hour Plays (virtual) Broadway Gala

The 24 Hour Plays Broadway Gala takes place ON Giving Tuesday, so plan to end your charitable day on a high (and hilarious) note. If you’re new to the 24 Hour Plays concept, a group of celebrities split into six teams and write, rehearse, and perform six plays in 24 Hours. The theatrical marathon features quite the star-studded line-up, including Rachel Dratch, Jesse Eisenberg, Noah Galvin, Bebe Neuwirth, Michael Zegen, and so many more big names.

Proceeds support The 24 Hour Plays year-round non-profit programs, including The 24 Hour Plays National Fellows (a free professional intensive for young theater artists), The 24 Hour Plays: Viral Monologues (over 340 free-to-view socially-distanced theater pieces during the pandemic), productions of The 24 Hour Plays with theater partners worldwide, subsidized productions for schools and colleges, and more. Get tickets to the December 1 gala starting at $30.

Old Friends New Work Benefit

Enjoy new material written and performed by some of Manhattan Theatre Club’s favorite collaborators including Joshua Boone (Actually, Network), Edie Falco (The Madrid, Nurse Jackie), Laura Linney (My Name is Lucy Barton, Ozark), Jeremy Pope (Choir Boy, Hollywood) and more.

The benefit is free to view, but all donations will ensure MTC is able to continue its mission to develop and produce innovative theatre of the highest quality by American and international playwrights, with a focus on presenting New York, American, and world premieres. Get tickets with donation amounts starting at $10.

Time Stands Still

The holidays are a time to reconnect with loved ones (safely, and ideally virtually), and that’s exactly what the original Broadway cast of Time Stands Still plans to do. The next show in Broadway’s Best Shows: Spotlight on Plays line-up reunites the 2010 cast including Laura Linney, Alicia Silverstone, Eric Bogosian, and Brian d’Arcy James. Once again, Daniel Sullivan directs Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies’ play about a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent trying to find happiness in a world that seems to have gone crazy.

Proceeds for Spotlight on Plays benefit The Actor’s Fund, an organization that provides emergency financial assistance, affordable housing, health care and insurance counseling, senior care, & more to the entertainment community. The show premieres on December 3 and will be available to view on demand for 96 hours. Contribute what you can and get tickets starting at $5.

An Evening with Audra McDonald

Having Audra McDonald serenade us in our living room while supporting an iconic New York institution? Take all our money! Don’t miss your chance to catch this utterly magnificent vocalist and record-breaking Tony Award winner in concert, filmed live from the City Center stage.

Your generous support of City Center’s 2020 Gala: An Evening with Audra McDonald will ensure New York City Center is able to continue its founding mission to provide access to the best in the performing arts to the widest possible audience and to support artists with new opportunities to create and perform. Get tickets for $30.

Musical Mentors Collaborative Winter Gala

Musical Mentors Collaborative is a music education nonprofit that provides free, one-on-one music instruction to students who wouldn’t otherwise have access to private lessons. For their Winter Gala on December 19, they are presenting Sutton Foster in concert as well as performances by Musical Mentors students and special appearances from other Broadway stars.

We don’t know for sure if Sutton will be singing “Gimme, Gimme” from Thoroughly Modern Millie, but it would certainly be the perfect theme song for persuading audiences to open their checkbooks. Get early-bird tickets from $20 through Giving Tuesday.

Close Encounters: The Moth Live from Green-wood Cemetery

You may have heard their podcast, but have you seen them live from a cemetery? The Moth, a nonprofit dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling, brings you Close Encounters: The Moth Live from Green-wood Cemetery, filmed live in one of Brooklyn’s most famous locations. Watch on demand as five beloved Moth storytellers take the stage to share true stories of chance meetings, secret rendezvous, near misses and narrow escapes. Get tickets for $20

If you found yourself thinking about how grateful you were for national treasure Laurie Metcalf this Thanksgiving (as we do every Thanksgiving), consider following her lead in supporting The Actor’s Fund. In this final Broadway’s Best Shows: Spotlight on Plays production of 2020, Metcalf joins an ensemble including Colman Domingo, S. Epatha Merkerson, Tamberla Perry, Kimberly Hebert Gregory, Heather Simms, Carrie Coon, David Morse, Kristine Nielsen and Annie McNamara in a rollicking play written and directed by Slave Play’s Robert O’Hara.

Barbecue premieres on December 10 and will be available to view on demand for 96 hours. Contribute what you can and get tickets starting at $5.

Signature Vinyl

If you’re a millennial spending the holidays away from your fam (first of all, thank you for being safe), cure your homesick blues by listening to your parents’ favorite music. Okay let’s be honest, it’s some of our favorite music too. Signature Vinyl features the hits of Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Carole King, Marvin Gaye, Berry Gordy, Joni Mitchell, Elton John and others in a cinematic concert filmed at several outdoor locations across the DC area.

Your support helps keep Signature strong during the closure as they continue bringing artistic and education programming to the DC community in innovative ways. Pick your price to view the show on demand and get tickets starting at $25.

Three Decembers

Opera? Check. Family drama? Check. Holiday fare? Check. Opera San Jose’s new production, which was fully staged and professionally filmed for streaming, is a 90-minute American opera based on an unpublished Terrence McNally play called “Some Christmas Letters.” You can see the world-renowned mezzo-soprano Susan Graham star in what’s been called “a modern masterpiece” all while snuggled up under a blanket this holiday season.

Your ticket purchase helps Opera San Jose continue their mission of developing and supporting emerging artists. Get an exclusive discount on tickets for $30 per household.

And if these streams didn’t strike your fancy or if you have more funds to spare, consider donating to one of the 1300 non-profit performing arts institutions that TodayTix is proud to call a partner organization. With your help, we can all ensure that theater will come back stronger.
