Kathryn Gallagher Plays Intimate Set at the W with TodayTix Presents
Kathryn Gallagher brought her signature rock sound to the W Hotel in Times Square on Monday night, as part of the TodayTix Presents concert series. The Broadway star and series regular on Netflix’s “You” performed a series of original songs, stripped-down Broadway tunes, and throwback pop hits. Gallagher was last seen onstage at American Repertory Theater in the Alanis Morissette musical “Jagged Little Pill,” which announced a Broadway transfer earlier in the day. “I guess we’re going to Broadway,” Gallagher said as the crowd erupted in applause.
Gallagher opened her set with “Mama Who Bore Me” from “Spring Awakening.” She starred in the Deaf West revival of the show on Broadway in 2015. While she didn’t sing the song in the production, she brought a unique, stripped-down take on the classic.
Gallagher also performed original music, including “If You’ll Have Me,” “Bored,” and “I Wanna Wear a Dress,” alongside cellist Jacob Yates. “All love songs are sad songs,” she said, positing that the only ways out of a relationship are death or if one person changes their mind.
One of the highlights of the evening was her performance of the Sara Bareilles 11 o’clock number from “Waitress,” “She Used to Be Mine,” which Gallagher said she can’t perform without crying. (We feel you, girl!)
Guests enjoyed specialty cocktails at the W, including one called the Jagged Little Pill. Her co-stars from “You” Elizabeth Lail and Nicole Kang attended, as well as friends like Stephanie Styles, Beanie Feldstein, and fellow TodayTix presents star Ethan Slater.
Gallagher completed her set with “You Learn” from the musical, asking the audience to join her and sing along. Her spontaneous encore? Britney Spears’s “Hit Me Baby, One More Time.” We hope she does this concert one more (or many more) time.
