It’s almost August and Mercury is retrograde (bummer). If that’s not weird enough for ya we’ve got pretty dope weird and wonderful event offerings for you this weekend. Take a day trip to the scenic and notoriously experimental Bard SummerScape festival, get jazzy at Birdland, or experience the puppetry performance of a lifetime this weekend. Let’s go!

Bard SummerScape
Hudson Valley, New York
Festival, Music, Dance, Experimental

Every summer Bard SummerScape offers seven weeks of opera, theater, dance, and cabaret and it will blow your freakin’ mind. Not only is the Hudson Valley scenic af but the work shows at the Fisher Center is bold and beautiful. This weekend check out the incomparable Broadway icon, Chita Rivera as the Tony Award winner recreates moments from her legendary career including numbers from “West Side Story”; “Sweet Charity”; “Chicago”; “Kiss of the Spider Woman”; and more! Also this weekend is Anton Rubinstein’s fiery operatic masterpiece “Demon” based on the renowned fantasy poem by Mikhail Lermontov.

Symphonie Fantastique
Manhattan, Downtown
Play, Experimental, Puppets

Internationally renowned puppet master Basil Twist remounts “Symphonie Fantastique” twenty years after it’s groundbreaking premiere. This is truly one of those “you need to see it to believe it” kind of events, but we’ll just say there is classical music and a 1,000-gallon water tank with a beautiful dancing puppet. Take a break from the weirdness of Mercury’s retrograde and lose yourself in this experience.

Marilyn Maye at Birdland Theater
Brooklyn, Barclay’s Center
Comedy, Stand-up

She’s 90 and fierce and she’s coming to Birdland Theater to melt your face off….it’s Broadway sweetheart Marilyn Maye! From a humble beginning as an amateur contest singing sensation in her native Topeka, Kansas, to 76 appearances on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the mid 1960’s and inclusion in the Smithsonian permanent collection of 20th century recordings, vocalist Marilyn has done it all and now you can see her do it all at legendary Birdland Jazz in their brand new Birdland Theater space.

This Ain’t No Disco
Manhattan, Chelsea
Experimental, Musical, Rock Opera

If you loved “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” – this one’s for you! Part rock opera, part impressionist tone poem set in the nightclubs and art world of 1979 New York City, ‘This Ain’t No Disco’ interweaves the stories of strivers, dreamers and drifters searching for their place in the downtown NYC arts scene. There’s nothing not to like about a musical set at Studio 54 and this energetic piece will have you leaving inspired.
