When LaChanze was growing up, her parents would change the radio station every time the dance pop hit “Love to Love You Baby” came on the radio. “I was immediately intrigued,” the Tony winner says. “I wanted to know everything about Donna Summer.”

Now, she’s helping bring the singer’s life to the stage in the new jukebox musical “Summer,” which premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in the fall and will begin performances on Broadway on March 28. “She really had a dual existence, and she did not like being considered a disco queen,” LaChanze says. “She felt that she was much more than that. She was also a very spiritual woman, and I really respect that and admire that.”

LaChanze is sitting at a table at The Wren, a rustic and cozy restaurant on the Bowery. In terms of drinks, she’s a fan of “anything spicy with vodka in it,” and she looks for bars with “good cocktails, good ambiance, and good music.” The Wren certainly fits that bill.
