The incredibly timely and relevant piece — which serves as the third installment of Dominique Morisseau’s acclaimed trilogy “The Detroit Project” —is playing at the Geffen Playhouse through July 8.

The Squirrels
Why not escape the heat with a winter-set comedy, in which a slew of squirrels are seriously feuding like a soap opera set in the animal kingdom? The new, fast-paced play from Robert Askins is packed with R-rated punchlines, cleverly-staged action, and a ton of tail. And, lucky for you, the production has just been extended at the La Jolla Playhouse through July 8.

The Humans
Take a family trip to the Ahmanson Theatre to see “The Humans,” in which Reed Birney and Jayne Houdyshell reprise their Tony Award-winning performances as parents visiting their daughter in Manhattan for Thanksgiving. Anxieties rise as the sun sets, and the clan’s deepest fears and biggest mistakes are freshly served. The staging of Stephen Karam’s play, which features additional members of the original Broadway cast, runs through July 29.
