How to Celebrate World Theatre Day From Home
As we (im)patiently wait for theaters around the world to reopen, we’re celebrating World Theatre Day from our couch — and you can too!
We’re launching a live piano bar sing-a-long with pianist Franca Vercelloni from New York’s iconic Marie’s Crisis Cafe. Tune in at 6PM EST on our Facebook and Instagram channels to join in, request a song, and sing out loud.
This global crisis has somehow made our theatrical community feel a little smaller, so take this time to enjoy performances from all around the world, join friends near and far online, and celebrate everything you love about theater.
Tune in to Our Live Piano Bar Sing-a-long at 6PM EST
Have we got a show for you! Whether you love karaoke (or not), a piano bar is a one-of-a-kind experience. Since we can’t go out to our favorite haunts right now, tune in for a virtual sing-a-long with pianist Franca Vercelloni of New York’s Marie’s Crisis Cafe. Tune in at 6PM EST on Facebook and Instagram. Let’s all sing (alone) together.
Watch a (Virtual) Performance from Theaters Around the World
With theaters shut down, we have a rare opportunity to enjoy performances from around the world online. From The Metropolitan Opera to The National Theatre, tune into a virtual live performance and take a trip right from your couch. Here are some shows you can watch.
Have a Movie Musical Marathon
While we’re definitely missing live theater, there’s nothing like a big, brassy movie musical. Enjoy classic stage shows onscreen with “Les Misèrables” and “Chicago” or the film-only variety like “The Greatest Showman” and “Mary Poppins Returns.” The options are endless. Here’s where to watch in the U.S. and here’s where to watch in the U.K.
Make a Theater-themed Cocktail
We know you’ve all be trying to improvise with whatever provisions you have at home, so why not give your cocktail hour a theatrical face-lift? Anyone for a Beetle-Gin-and-Juice? Check out some recipes here.
Go for a Tony Awards YouTube Spiral
Even though the Tony Awards are postponed due to the Broadway shutdown, you can still relive some of our favorite performances from the past. We’ll just be over here watching Jennifer Holiday singing “And I’m Telling You” on a loop. Watch some showstoppers here.
Listen to Some Uplifting Musical Theater Songs
You know what helps us get through tough times? Showtunes. Some we compiled some uplifting and inspiring tunes to provide comfort in these uncertain times. Check out the Spotify playlist here.
Get Advice from Your Favorite Theater Stars
How are actors and creatives weathering the shutdown? Find out in our new series, The Distancing Diaries. From book, podcast, and recipe recommendations to inspiring words, check out how some of your favorite stars are spending their time.
Take a Class from Anywhere
Actors, writers, dancers, and more are streaming their talents, and some are even teaching, from playwriting workshops to ballet class. Check out some of the workshops you can take online.
Donate to Arts Organizations Around the World
These are financially tough times for the arts community, and everyone from Broadway to small nonprofit theaters are hurting. If you have the means (we know it’s rough times for everyone!), consider donating to an organization providing support to artists in need. Check out some here.
