Whether you’re in the mood for comedy, drama or something Christmassy, there are plenty of great theatre shows opening in London this December. It might be a midweek treat, a weekend date night or the perfect pre-Christmas gift, but no matter what, you’ll have a great time with these shows. Here’s a look at a few productions to watch out for.

Wild Honey

Hampstead Theatre, 2nd December – 14th Jan

Michael Frayn’s Wild Honey is drawn from Chekhov’s untitled – and posthumously discovered – early play. It’s a tale of 19th Century Russian life, full of classic misunderstandings, passion, nostalgia and fading glory. A village schoolmaster, Platonov, finds his life full of beautiful women, one of whom he’s even married to. But when the Summer sun heats things up, his life gets complicated.

Hedda Gabler

National Theatre, 5th December – 21st March

Ruth Wilson stars in Hedda Gabler, a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen‘s classic drama, directed by Ivo Van Hove. Hedda is new to married life but already sees it isn’t everything she’d like it to be. Their relationship is tested to its limits when her husband’s competitor arrives on the scene, calling into question everything in their lives.

Dirty Dancing

Phoenix Theatre, 6th December – 31st December

The timeless love story of Baby Houseman and Johnny Castle comes to the stage in Dirty Dancing. You’ve got just one month to see this all new production, featuring our favourite songs from the movie, including, “Hungry Eyes”, “Hey Baby”, “Do You Love Me?” and the heart stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life”.

The Red Shoes

Sadler’s Wells, 6th December – 29th January

Based on the iconic film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, don’t miss The Red Shoes. Legendary choreographer Sir Matthew Bourne‘s production tells the story of Victoria, whose ambition is to be the greatest dancer in the world, and the men in her life who inspire her passion.

A Christmas Carol

Arts Theatre, 8th December – 7th January

Simon Callow brings the Charles Dicken‘s classic story, A Christmas Carol, to life at the Arts Theatre. The performance is a one-man story-telling show that is set to be a real festive treat. If you’ve never seen this timeless tale on stage before, now is the time!

Much Ado About Nothing/Love’s Labours Lost

Theatre Royal Haymarket, 9th December – 18th March

Following a 2014 run in Stratford-upon Avon and Chichester, Much Ado About Nothing and Love’s Labours Lost are the perfect double-bill. Matching events, characters and themes suggest that these razor-sharp romances belong together. In Love’s Labour’s Lost two sparring lovers, Berowne and Rosaline, are separated; at the start of Much Ado About Nothing (or Love’s Labour’s Won), two sparring lovers meet again after a long absence and continue to quarrel, until they are tricked into acknowledging their love.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Criterion Theatre, 15th December – 31st December

Painter and decorator by day, Mr Popper spends his time dreaming of Antarctic adventures. He is astounded when one day a packing crate arrives on his doorstep, out of which waddles a penguin! Mayhem, music and fun ensue. Children of all ages will adore Mr. Popper’s Penguins!

O Come, All Ye Divas

Charing Cross Theatre, 20th December – 7th January

Hilarious impressionist, singer and cabaret performer, Christina Bianco, brings a fun-filled show to the Charing Cross Theatre. Christina shot to fame when a video of her impersonating the likes of Idina Menzel, Barbra Streisand, Britney Spears and more went viral. O Come, All Ye Divas will feature songs, games and sketches, all with a live band, sounds like a great night!

The Kite Runner

Wyndham’s Theatre, 21st December – 11th March

Based on Khaled Hosseini‘s international best-selling novel, The Kite Runner, is powerful story has now been adapted into a stunning new stage production. A haunting tale of friendship which spans cultures and continents, it follows one man’s journey to confront his past and find redemption. “There is a way to be good again”. It’s a beautiful afternoon in Kabul and the skies are full of the excitement and joy of a kite flying tournament. But neither Hassan or Amir can foresee the terrible incident which will shatter their lives forever.
