Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol is one of the most-produced plays of all time, making appearances on stages across the globe each year. With countless adaptations, this perennial favorite is a prized tradition for audiences of all ages. Follow the infamous curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge as he journeys to the past, through the present, and to the future to find the true meaning of the holidays in this tale of redemption.

From ghost stories to dancing, from carols to the heartwarming Tiny Tim, A Christmas Carol is a must-see every year. There are musical versions, one-man shows, immersive experiences and more. Find where it’s playing near you and get into the holiday spirit!

New York

This year, New York is presenting three fresh takes on the classic tale: a musical adaptation, a one-man show, and a Christmas mystery.

A Christmas Carol the Musical at Players Theatre

The Players Theatre in New York City is back with A Christmas Carol the Musical for the 14th year. With music and lyrics by Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell and British pantomime-inspired scenic design, the show brings plenty of holiday magic — and caroling! Performances run through December 30.

A Sherlock Carol at New World Stages

A Sherlock Carol is a sequel of sorts to the original A Christmas Carol tale with a twist. The play takes place after Ebenezer Scrooge has died under mysterious circumstances, and a now-grown Tiny Tim hires a detective to investigate. But not just any detective: Sherlock Holmes, who finds himself haunted by the very ghosts that visited Scrooge. A Sherlock Carol brings a little intrigue and a lot of cheer to audiences of all ages through January 2.

One Christmas Carol at The Chain Theatre

One Christmas Carol strips Dickens’ tale to its bare essentials. Gone is any tinsel and trappings and intricate period costume and sets — along with most of the actors. Continuing a 26-year family tradition, J. Max Baker steps into the shoes of Scrooge, and the ghosts, and Bob Cratchit, and Tiny Tim, and everyone else in this 75-minute adaptation written by his father, Douglas H. Baker. See this feat of storytelling from December 15-19.

London

In London, you can experience Dickens’s tale from a new perspective, where a different character besides Scrooge takes the lead.

Cratchit

Cratchit at Park Theatre

As it turns out, Scrooge wasn’t the only man to receive a ghostly visitor on Christmas Eve. Olivier Award winner John Dagleish stars as Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s underpaid and overworked clerk, who goes through his own journey through future Christmases in this play. Cratchit was presented virtually last year to acclaim, and now you can see its reworked live world premiere through January 7.
