Enjoy the perks of being a Millennial or student.

Theaters are always looking for new ways to bring a diversity of patrons through their doors. If you’re a millennial or student, there is likely to be a discount available for you. For instance, join 35 below and tickets to any Huntington performance are $30 and you receive extra perks like invites to production after parties (yes, that includes cocktails, entertainment and networking.) ArtsEmerson, North Shore Music Theatre, Central Square Theatre, Huntington, Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston all offer great discounts for full-time high school or college students. Just make sure you bring your ID to the box office or you will be out of luck!

Use a military discount.

…Only if you’ve served in the military, obviously. Most theaters offer a discount to active duty and veteran military personnel, some of which include The Huntington Theatre and Central Square Theatre. Make sure to identify yourself to the box office when ordering your tickets for your discount to be applied.

Enter a Rush program.

Specific to each theater, sometimes you can purchase tickets for as low as $10! Actors Shakespeare Project, Reagle Music Theatre, Lyric Stage Company, ArtsEmerson, Central Square Theatre, ArtsEmerson and Stoneham Theatre offer rush programs throughout the week that will get you into the theater for less.

Volunteer as an Usher.

Ushering is such an easy way to support your local theater and to see a show for free! Whether it’s collecting tickets or tidying up after the performance, your help is greatly appreciated and rewarded with free admission. For starters, check out Actors Shakespeare Project and Central Square Theatre to learn how you can get started.

Go with the Pay What You Can option.

Most theaters offer at least one PWYC performance per production. Check out the show calendar to learn what days are PWYC during the run. Or you could just see a performance at The Hub Theatre where it’s PWYC for “Every seat. Every show. Every time.”

Theatre on Fire offers a similar model whereby you choose your price for a ticket. While $10 is the standard ticket price, you’re more than welcome to reserve a ticket for free admission through Theatre on Fire’s box office website. If you opt to pay $20 for a ticket, your generosity is helping to subsidize tickets for those who choose to pay $0.

High-five your boss for being a corporate partner.

If you work for one of these companies, you can save $10 at Huntington productions with your corporate discount.

Get a group together.

The hassle of wrangling 10 of your closest friends to all go do something together on one night may seem daunting, but, if you’re planning a group outing, make sure to inquire about group rates. Most theaters offer discounts for groups of 10 but sometimes this can be as high as 15 people.

Do your research.

Plenty of third-party websites offer discounts to a variety of shows around town. Do your research to make sure you’re getting the best deal (and watch out for hidden fees!)

Use your credit card company.

If you’re getting tickets on a behemoth site like Ticketmaster, your Amex card may garner you special deals and discounts. Visa, Discover, and most other major credit card companies have perks and rewards programs that include entertainment options too.

TodayTix is a mobile app for last-minute theater tickets. It allows users to search available shows and buy tickets for performances occurring the same day or up to seven days in advance from their phones. It’s available for iOS and Android and some shows on TodayTix even have Lottery or Rush programs for extra special deals.
