Check Out These Online Classes and Resources You Can Access While Social Distancing
Whether you’re an artist looking to sharpen your creative skills, or a freelancing professional in search of inspiration to get you through COVID-19 related closures, we’ve rounded up classes and resources that are being offered for the arts community during this time.
As we all know the arts can be incredibly healing, and even though we can’t go to the theater right now, we can still learn from some of its greats. From Instagram ballet classes to playwriting workshops, check out our guide to ways to stay active and creative during this time.
Workshops & Classes
Broadway Weekends At Home
Founded by Jeanna de Waal (“Diana”) and her sister, Broadway Weekends is an immersive theatrical experience, connecting theater lovers directly to the artists at the heart of the Broadway industry. Broadway Weekends will be hosting free online musical theater classes taught by Broadway and West End talent. To sign up to classes, join the private Facebook group, Broadway Weekends at Home.
BroadwayEvolved is the Broadway intensive for students and educators co-created by actor Betsy Wolfe (“Falsettos”). They will be offering 15-minute classes with theater professionals that will focus on voice, dance, acting, and career advice. Teachers will be announced on March 23 at 12PM EST, and teachers will go live Monday-Friday from BroadwayEvolved on Instagram @broadwayevolved.
Bridge to Broadway
Launched by teacher, writer, and director Erik Liberman, Bridge to Broadway is an online training platform matching musical theater students and young professionals with seasoned Broadway professionals.
From the comfort of your own home, interface with Tony Award-winning actors, directors, music directors, composers, lyricists, casting directors, and vocal coaches in behind-the-scenes conversations and interactive Q&As.
The nonprofit arts training organization Broadway Dreams will offer free, online programming daily to help students while practicing social distancing.
To participate, users must download Zoom and visit Broadway Dreams’s Facebook page for the daily link. Students can expect to learn about theatrical writing, self-taping auditions, perfecting headshot selfies, warm-ups, make-up tutorials, and more.
Principal dancer at New York City Ballet Tiler Peck is going live on Instagram @tilerpeck daily at 1PM EST Monday-Friday with free ballet class. After every class, Peck will answer any general questions the viewers may have about ballet or the class.
Primary Stages Presents Primary Plus
Created by Primary Stages and the Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA), Primary Plus is a series of online programs aimed at helping artists connect with each other.
Free online masterclasses participants include Theresa Rebeck, Kate Hamill, Jason O’Connell, Mary Bacon, Thom Sesma, Jennifer Mudge, Chris Coffey, Kimberly Senior, Sharon Washington, and more to be announced. Watch virtual master classes here. Learn more about all the programming here.
Americans for the Arts Resource and Response Center
Americans for the Arts serves, advances, and leads the network of organizations and individuals who cultivate, promote, sustain, and support the arts in America. They have set up a resource and respond Center webpage that will be updated daily with news and resources for artists.
ArtsReady is an online emergency preparedness service by and for artists and cultural nonprofits, providing arts organizations with customized business continuity plans for post-crisis sustainability.
