About Mahler's Klagende Lied

The charismatic conductor Simone Young is one of Australia’s finest musical exports. Her gift for shaping huge orchestral forces will be brilliantly displayed in Gustav Mahler’s dark and theatrical fairy tale, Das Klagende Lied.

In this rare masterpiece, enchanted horns usher in dark forests where two brothers vie for the queen’s hand, with dire consequences… Inspired by stories from the Brothers Grimm, Das Klagende Lied calls for singers, choir and two orchestras. It’s Gustav Mahler’s first published score, a preview of his epic, kaleidoscopic later symphonies. Like those works, Das Klagende Lied bursts with the magic and mystery of nature, and the joys and fears of childhood.

Join the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the final concert of the 2019 Season at the Sydney Opera House.

Simone Young's Visions of Vienna is supported by the Robert and Ruth Magid Artistic Leadership Fund.
