About Dance Series 01 - San Francisco
"Dance Series 01" features some of Smuin’s most memorable works. Revisit Michael Smuin’s beloved masterpiece The Eternal Idol, as well as his final creation for the Company, Schubert Scherzo. Smuin’s romantic pas de deux. The Eternal Idol is inspired by Auguste Rodin’s sculptures of couples locked in loving embraces, and brought the artwork to life through the medium of dance. Schubert Scherzo is a lively ensemble piece for five couples, set to Franz Schubert’s Symphony in C Major, was called “a clear statement of [Smuin’s] legacy, at its best” by The New York Times.
Get a glimpse of the future of contemporary ballet with three mainstage premieres from Company dancers Nicole Haskins, Ben Needham-Wood, and former dancer Rex Wheeler. Each emerging choreographer will be presenting works initially workshopped in Smuin’s Choreography Showcases.
End the evening with Blue Until June, Trey McIntyre’s sultry tribute to Etta James. The piece delves into the nuances of relationships, shown in a tumultuous and passionate light against the backdrop of Etta James’ classic songs At Last, Fool That I Am, and more.
