About Flying University

We all know Prince, but how much do we know about the worlds around him? Join Andrea Swensson and guests for an in-depth discussion of the history of music that lead to Prince's breakout, accompanied by samples from DJ David Kiss.

This talk series is named after the underground university in Russian-occupied Poland that taught subjects banned by the state-run schools. This rebel organization also educated women, who were barred from attending the official university, including Marie Curie. In that spirit, each Flying University talk highlights a piece of history that has been “conveniently forgotten”. Lets set the record straight.

Andrea Swensson is an author, radio host, and music journalist. She hosts The Local Show at Minnesota Public Radio’s 89.3 The Current and has contributed music journalism to NPR Music, City Pages, Mpls/St. Paul Magazine, and Paisley Park, where she has written several tour guide books for Prince's museum.

David Kiss is a native New Yorker, DJ, producer, curator, and musician. As a founding member of both the infamous Might Get Weird parties and NYC house collective The Deep, he has swiftly made a name for himself as an intuitive vibe selector. With stints at NYC mainstays such as House Of Yes, Output, and Webster Hall, it seems like he’s everywhere, from late night afters, to the Dominican Republic, Thailand, and AfrikaBurn.
