Who doesn’t love a story about drag queens saving a local business? Charlie Price inherits his family’s nearly-bankrupt shoe factory in Northampton, while his snobby fiancée just wants to move to London and escape the perils of small-town life. When Charlie meets Lola, a feisty and vivacious drag queen, at a nightclub in the city, he has an idea: What if the factory entered a niche market? Fast forward to Lola and her entourage visiting Price & Sons, to some of the workers’ chagrin, to request some reinforced steel in their 4 and a half inch heels. Charlie seems just the man for the job. “The sex is in the heel,” after all. Together, Lola and Charlie form an unstoppable partnership and teach each other and their friends about love, acceptance, and learning to “just be who you wanna be.”

Based on the 2005 film of the same name (starring a young Chiwetel Ejiofor as Lola), the musical won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2016 Olivier Award in 2016 for the West End premiere. Broadway legend Jerry Mitchell directed and choreographed the show, with book by Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. “The New York Times’s” Ben Brantley advises, “Try to resist if you must,” and you’ll leave the theater dancing with a warm heart and inspired mind. Everybody say yeah!

What To Watch For

  • Cyndi Lauper is the only woman to receive the Tony Award for Best Score on her own. “Kinky Boots” is her first musical, and she’s currently working on a musical adaptation of the movie “Working Girl.”
  • The show features 80 wigs that have their own dedicated staff to style and preserve.
  • It’s not just glitz and glitter: The musical is inspired by the true story of Steve Pateman, who launched a line of high-heeled boots for men, called Divine Footwear, to save his family’s shoe factory. Pateman’s life was the subject of a 1999 BBC documentary, which then led to the 2005 film.
