Asmeret Ghebremichael will interview set designer Derek McLane about his work designing sets for TV musicals, including Hairspray, Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and The Wiz.
Together, Asmeret and Derek will navigate the development of his beautiful work, and discuss the progression of ideas, design, camera work, and how that all affects the final product. The conversation will conclude with a Q&A.
Derek McLane is a Tony and Emmy Award-winning set designer, whose Broadway credits include Moulin Rouge!, A Soldier’s Play, American Son, The Parisian Woman, Children of a Lesser God, The Price, Noises Off, Fully Committed, Beautiful, Gigi, Follies, and more. His TV credits include the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017 Academy Awards as well as the NBC LIVE! Musicals The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, The WIZ & HAIRSPRAY.
Asmeret Ghebremichael appeared in the McLane designed production of The Wiz, and is also Broadway veteran whose credits include Legally Blonde the Musical, Wicked, Spamalot, Elf, and The Book of Mormon.
Proceeds for this event benefit the Loveland Foundation, an organization committed to showing up for communities of color in unique and powerful ways, with a particular focus on Black women and girls. Their resources and initiatives are collaborative and they prioritize opportunity, access, validation, and healing.
