About The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra

The intrepid Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and violin “performer extraordinaire” Pekka Kuusisto (Strad) bring an ingenious program pairing classical works with contemporary innovation. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 gives way to a new companion piece by Swedish composer Anders Hillborg, Bach Materia, a witty, spirited work that hinges on improvisation. Haydn’s harmonically adventurous Symphony No. 99 is followed by Prokofiev’s agile “Classical” Symphony, which references Haydn’s genius.

The beauty, joy and freshness of the Saint Paul players’ music-making...didn’t just breathe life into well-worn standards of the repertory. It was also a reassurance that participatory democracy is alive and well.
