About The Gondoliers, or The King of Barataria
In 1730 the Mediterranean island nation of Barataria is wracked by sectarian strife, as the king’s conversion to Protestantism riles the traditionally Catholic nation. The king’s forces prevail, but not before the king’s only son and heir, the infant royal prince, is stolen from the palace. Years pass, and nothing is heard of the boy. In 1750, however, the king is slain in a Catholic uprising, making the missing babe – now a young man – the rightful king of Barataria, and the search for him intensifies.
