Frank London and Deep Singh’s Bagels & Bhangra
About Frank London
Grammy-winning trumpeter Frank London of The Klezmatics, and Indian percussion virtuoso Deep Singh, transform Irving Fields’ classic 1959 LP Bagels & Bongos into a slamming Yiddish-infused Punjabi bhangra party! Fields fused Latin and Yiddish music in interpreting classic Yiddish songs like “Bay Mir Bist du Sheyn”, London and Singh add a host of influences from Downtown Jazz to Bollywood to Klezmer. Frank and Deep have collaborated on a number of projects, from Sharabi, the world’s first Bhangra-Funk-Klezmer party band, to the radical multimedia re-telling of Salomé: Woman of Valor. Deep studied with Ustad AllaRakha and taught George Harrison and has played with everyone from Falu to Sting.
He was featured in the Broadway shows Bombay Dreams and Monsoon Wedding; nominated for a Grammy for his work on Falu’sBazaar; and is New York’s pre-eminent dhol and tablaplayer. Sir Frank London, the “mystic high priest of downtown avant klezmer-jazz”, recently premiered his Cuban-Yiddish opera, Hatuey Memory of Fire. Recent events include the sold out Carnegie Hall concert From The Shtetl to the Stage; Ghetto Songs at Hamburg’s prestigious Elbephilharmonie, and Kurt Weill in NY at the Weill Festival in Dessau, Germany.
