Imani Uzuri: Sinners and Saints Festival - Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting
About Imani Uzuri
Vocalist, composer and cultural worker Imani Uzuri curates a monthly festival celebrating Black American vernacular cultural practices. Growing up in rural North Carolina, Uzuri comes from a family of quilters, moonshine makers, sinners and saints. She would attend Wednesday night prayer meetings with her maternal grandmother and extended family in their small country church where they would sing African-American Spirituals and Line-Sing old metered hymns. These monthly gatherings at Joe’s Pub are a tribute to these holy ghost filled devotionals and will feature musical performances featuring early blues, early gospel (including quartet singing) and early rock & roll. Come clap, praise, dance and sing along celebrating the ways in which sacred and secular (sometimes even profane) often intertwine in these Black American cultural forms from the pulpit to the juke joint.
All ages are welcome, but performances may include adult language and topics.
