About Mother of the Maid
Six-time Academy Award nominee and three-time Tony and Emmy winner Glenn Close ("Sunset Boulevard," "Damages") returns in a breathtaking new play by Emmy winner Jane Anderson ("Olive Kitteridge," "The Baby Dance," "Defying Gravity").
"Mother of the Maid" tells the story of Joan of Arc’s mother (Glenn Close), a sensible, hard-working, God-fearing peasant woman whose faith is upended as she deals with the baffling journey of her odd and extraordinary daughter. This riveting play is an epic tale told through an unexpected and remarkable new perspective.
Emmy nominee Matthew Penn ("Law and Order," "The Sopranos," "Damages") directs this deeply moving drama about the glories and challenges of raising an exceptional child.

Tell Me More
Dealing with teenagers is difficult, no matter who they are — especially Joan of Arc. Jane Anderson’s “Mother of the Maid” shifts the focus of the classic tale about The Maid of Orléans, who was burned at the stake for witchcraft and heresy, and places Joan’s mother center stage. Told through the lens of the late Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a key visionary behind Joan’s actions to drive the English out of France, the play tells the story of Isabelle, Joan’s mother (played by six-time Academy Award nominee and three-time Tony winner Glenn Close), and how she deals with her daughter’s epic journey.
Following a 2015 world-premiere engagement at Shakespeare & Company, “Mother of the Maid,” under the direction of Emmy nominee Matthew Penn (“Law and Order,” “The Sopranos,” “Damages”), charts the rise and fall of a genius — and how a mother is left devastated when her daughter’s life goes up in flames.
