About Good

John Halder is a good man. But John Halder must adapt to survive. How is it possible to be a good person when things are falling apart?

You make a deal with yourself one minute, you totally repudiate it the next.’

As the world faces its Second World War, John Halder, a decent, intelligent, music-loving German professor, finds himself swept along in a movement that crescendos towards an unthinkable finale. Good is a warning for our times.

Olivier Award-winning director Dominic Cooke reimagines one of Britain’s most powerful, political plays with David Tennant returning to the West End, from 21st April 2021 for 12 weeks only.

John Halder lives in Germany. He’s an intelligent, cultured man, working as a professor at a leading university. His life is pretty monotonous, until overwhelming political change rocks his career and livelihood. In order to survive, Halder joins the Nazi Party, rising in the party ranks and gaining notoriety. At first, he’s detached from reality. But, when Halder realises the true cost of his actions, can he continue?

Considered to be a leading Holocaust drama, Good examines the difficulties in staying true to your moral self, even if it doesn’t seem like the best course of action. It’s at the Harold Pinter Theatre for just 12 weeks, but it’s sure to be a stand-out play for our times.

  • Good was adapted into a film in 2008, starring Viggo Mortensen and Jason Isaacs.
  • Good first premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in 1981.
  • The play was considered to be in the top 100 “most significant plays of the 20th century” by the National Theatre.
