About The Lion, The Witch...

Step through the wardrobe this winter into the magical kingdom of Narnia for the most mystical of adventures in a faraway land. Join Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter as they wave goodbye to wartime Britain and say hello to a talking Faun, an unforgettable Lion and the coldest, cruellest White Witch.

This critically acclaimed production reunites director Sally Cookson with designer Rae Smith, writer in the room Adam Peck, movement director Dan Canham, lighting designer Bruno Poet, sound designer Ian Dickinson and music by Benji Bower all of whom originally brought the show to life in 2017 breaking box office records at Leeds Playhouse.

Tell Me More

While longtime fans of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” may have a clear picture of Narnia in their minds, this endlessly creative staging will be sure to surprise and thrill audiences at the Bridge Theatre this winter. Known around the world as a legendary children's book for more than 60 years, the Leeds Playhouse production honors this cherished piece of prose, but also imbues it with fresh energy, leading the Times to call it “a theatrical miracle.” This modern take on a classic story allows these beloved characters, from Edmund and Lucy to Mr. Beaver and Aslan, to leap from page to stage in truly thrilling style.

This production is a visual feast for the senses, as you cower beneath Aslan's mighty roar, or feel the bitter chill fall over the room as the White Witch makes her entrance. The Bridge Theatre has enlisted some of the finest technical talent outside of Narnia to execute this ambitious show, including Craig Leo, Bruno Poet, and Ian Dickinson as the puppetry director, lighting designer, and sound designer, respectively. Being transported back to childhood, or into a temporary state of wonder, is a natural side effect of such immersive and captivating theatre. Quite simply, director Marianne Elliot and producer Chris Harper have delivered a production that is nothing short of magic.

What To Watch For

  • This production made a monumental splash in Leeds back in 2017, breaking all records and selling more than 60,000 tickets.
  • “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” is only the second production staged by Elliot & Harper Productions, which was formed back in 2016 by Tony and Olivier Award-winning director Marianne Elliott and producer Chris Harper.
  • “The Chronicles of Narnia” series has seven legendary books, but it wasn't the only magical realm created during the 1940s. J.R.R. Tolkien was writing “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy at the same time. In fact, the two men were friends and often met to work together in an informal writer's group near Oxford.
  • It took C.S. Lewis nearly ten years to write “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” from 1939-1949, whereas the remaining six books of the series were completed and published in the subsequent seven years.
  • The Lion character was a late addition to the plot of the story, the Witch is based on a Hans Christian Andersen story (“The Snow Queen”), and the Wardrobe may have been inspired by a piece of Lewis's furniture in his countryside home, where three young girls were sent to stay to avoid the London bombings of WWII.
