About Ain't Misbehavin'
Take a step back into the raunchy nightclubs of 1920s Manhattan with Ain’t Misbehavin’ – a vivacious revue celebrating the legendary jazz musician Fats Waller and his energetic, exuberant and effervescent music.
Directed by Tyrone Huntley in his directorial debut, and choreographed by Oti Mabuse in her theatrical choreographing debut, this new production will mark the first London revival in almost 25 years. This show is guaranteed to get your toes tapping and fingers snapping with its sassy, sultry musical celebrations of life and love, and its huge sense of fun; a delightful evening of escapism!
Tell Me More
It’s about time London got its groove back with this upbeat, swinging revival of “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” The musical tribute to jazz icon Fats Waller returns to the London theatre scene after almost 25 years, and promises to have audiences itching to boogie in their seats.
Playing at the Southwark Playhouse, this exuberant throwback to the bumping nightclubs of the Harlem Renaissance marks two major debuts for artists turned theatremakers. After four seasons on BBC One’s hit television show “Strictly Come Dancing,” Oti Mabuse goes from dazzling audiences with her dancing to dazzling audiences with her choreography. Also for the first time, critically lauded actor Tyrone Huntley tries his hand at directing after his Evening Standard Award win for his turn in “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The production’s exciting new talent shines through in this spectacle of song and dance, transporting the audience back to a time of jumping jive and hep cats.
What To Watch For
- Oti Mabuse has been dancing in the spotlight for most of her career, on both “Strictly Come Dancing” and “The Greatest Dancer.” On her transition to behind-the-scenes work, she told the Evening Standard, “I think for the first time with this I won’t be on stage, and all I have to do is help other artists create a production... I’m going to sit there and enjoy not being a part of it and just be so proud of it.”
- Though the musical is first and foremost a celebration, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” is also a moving and nostalgic nod to a historically significant era for black American artists. Though it’s not meant to be an exact historical recreation, real venues like The Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom are represented and paid tribute in the show.
- Tyrone Huntley is a rising star in the musical theatre scene in the West End. Apart from his Olivier nomination and Evening Standard Award win for playing Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” he plays the lead in “Leave to Remain” at the Lyric Hammersmith just prior to his directorial debut for “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”
