Christopher Eccleston makes his RSC debut in the title role of Shakespeare’s psychological thriller, opposite Niamh Cusack as Lady Macbeth and with Edward Bennett as Macduff.
Returning home from battle, the victorious Macbeth meets three witches on the heath. Driven by their disturbing prophecies, he sets out on the path to murder.
Polly Findlay’s contemporary production of this dark tragedy of power and revenge marks her return to the Barbican following her stunning staging of The Alchemist in 2016.
The role of Macbeth will be played by Mr Paul Dodds on 18th October, 1.30pm

Tell Me More
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s latest presentation of the Scottish play “bulges with bright ideas” according to “The Guardian,” and stars Christopher Eccleston in his triumphant debut for the RSC playing the power-hungry king himself. Eccleston, most known for his role as the Ninth Doctor in the long-running beloved television series “Doctor Who,” plays a gruff, militant Macbeth who only grows darker as Lady Macbeth encourages him further down into the cavern of his bitter greed. This production of the classic cautionary tale is presented at The Barbican, a perfect space to house its combination of brooding darkness and lofty desires.
Director Polly Findlay casts bold emphasis on the egregious burden of time, showcasing the minute-by-minute unraveling of the king’s sanity with the glowing red countdown of a digital clock. Fans of the Shakespearean tragedy will admire the horror elements in Findlay’s rendition, complete with creepy little girls portraying the Weird Sisters and plenty of bloody terror to go around.
What To Watch For
- Macbeth has been Christopher Eccleston’s dream role ever since he started out as a young actor in an amateur production where he played both Macduff and the Sergeant. For this production he told the “Metro,” “I felt then, and I feel now, that I have the ammunition to play him.”
- Before her successful career as a theatre director, Polly Findlay was once a child actor, performing with the RSC herself at the age of 12. Now, she’s most noted for winning the James Menzies-Kitchin Trust's Young Theatre Director award in 2007.
- The RSC has had numerous memorable stagings of the Scottish play, including such critically acclaimed productions as the groundbreaking 1976 interpretation with Trevor Nunn and more recently with two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner Sir Anthony Sher.
