Tell Me More
Based on the 2007 film of the same name and with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, “Waitress” follows Jenna, an expert pie-maker who dreams of a better life.
After finding out she is unexpectedly pregnant and in an attempt to escape her loveless marriage, Jenna decides she wants to compete in a national pie-making competition to make some extra money. Her friends and colleagues, Becky and Dawn, support her decision and insist that she leaves her abusive husband Earl and escape the small American town. Matters are complicated further when she ends up falling in love with her handsome new doctor, while Earl continues his controlling ways. With a baby on the way, will she be able to turn her life around? With an all-female creative team, this empowering musical celebrates friendship, motherhood and the therapeutic power of baking.
Sara Bareilles & Gavin Creel feature in the cast until 14th March 2020.
What To Watch For
- When the show opened in New York, it marked the first Broadway show to have an all-female creative team. The London transfer also makes the show the first musical in West End history to have an all-female team.
- You will smell the show before you see it! On Broadway, an oven was installed in a passageway outside the entrance to the theatre, which wafts a delicious pie smell into the venue.
- There are at least a baker’s dozen uniquely named pies that Jenna creates during the show based on events in her own life, including Lulu’s Strawberry Dream Pie, Marshmallow Mermaid Pie, Got My Vote Rhubarb Compote Pie, and Sweet Victory Pie.
- The film that the musical is based on was written and directed by Adrienne Shelly, who tragically died shortly before the film premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
