In Shaw’s melodrama of the American Revolution, Dick Dudgeon is an outcast to both his family and the community of Websterbridge, New Hampshire. Dick’s only friend is the local minister, the Reverend Anthony Anderson, a rebel sympathizer. The approaching British army, commanded by General Burgoyne, is intent on hanging Anderson as an example of the fate of any rebel. When the minister disappears to join the rebel army, Dick Dudgeon impersonates him, and is sentenced by the British to be hanged in his place. What happens next will determine the outcome of the American Revolution.
