The play opens on a small New England college. Middle-aged couple the unmotivated George, an associate history professor, and his vicious gin-soaked wife, Martha, the daughter of the school's president has just returned home from a late night cocktail party hosted by Martha's father. She informs George that she invited the colleges newest young professor and his wife, the mousy Honey. Over the course of the next few hours, as the liquor sets in and tensions flare, George and Martha drags the couple into their sadistic head games. The night erupts into a no-holds-barred torrent of anger and verbal assault as each couple are forced with truth of their courtships.
