About An American in Paris

In 1928, George Gershwin wrote his orchestral suite An American in Paris, and two decades later, it inspired a movie musical of the same name, with the stellar creative lineup of director Vincente Minnelli, Broadway scenarist Alan Jay Lerner, choreographer and star Gene Kelly, costume designer Orry-Kelly, art director Cedric Gibbons, cinematographers Alfred Gilks and John Alton — and MGM production genius Arthur Freed. Legend has it that Freed went off "to create a movie about an American artist living in post-war France, working in as much of the Gershwins' famous catalog." And so a classic was born.
