About Illustrations: A Gallery Concert
Throughout opera’s illustrious history, from Viennese concert halls to New York skyscrapers, we have celebrated great singers—powerhouse vocalists who have brought houses down and moved audiences to tears. Of these legendary vocalists, African-American singers like Jessye Norman and Leontyne Price broke ground by making their debuts in the face of systemic adversity, often in theaters that were segregated. To kick off our new season and our commitment to the growth of opera as a living art form, Chicago Opera Theater joins visual artist and opera singer Luther Lewis to present Illustrations, a gallery exhibition and concert celebrating the contributions of African American singers to opera, featuring artists and selections from our upcoming season.
