About Moby-Dick

Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s grand American epic arrives in Chicago on the heels of critically acclaimed performances in Utah, Pittsburgh, and San Jose.

Based on Herman Melville’s magnum opus, the opera brings the perilous adventures of the Pequod to the stage. Captain Ahab gathers a crew on his quest for revenge on the legendary whale that cost him a leg. Set in real time, the sprawling novel comes to life on the operatic stage.

Featuring a sprawling chorus and massive orchestra, Moby-Dick is an epic feat of musical storytelling. This thrilling tale of adventure, passion, and vengeance is a not-to-be-missed event.

COT’s is the second professional production of Moby-Dick. It has previously been performed at Utah Opera, Opera San Jose, and Opera Pittsburgh. Following its run at Chicago Opera Theater, it will travel to Spain for a run at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

The opera was commissioned in 2005 by Dallas Opera in collaboration with San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera, State Opera of South Australia, and Calgary Opera.

Dedicated to Stephen Sondheim, Moby-Dick had its world premiere at Dallas Opera on April 30th, 2010. That production, directed by Leonard Foglia, was produced by the co-commissioning companies as well as Washington National Opera and Los Angeles Opera.

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale was written in 1851 by Herman Melville. The celebrated novel is considered an American classic, and has served as the inspiration and basis of many adaptations and works of art.
